Grand Marais kayak tour

Description

A Grand Marais kayak tour is the perfect way to dip your feet into the pond that is kayaking. We start our trip in the calm waters of the Grand Marais harbor where you’ll get a short lesson from an American Canoe Association trained kayaking instructor on how to paddle a kayak. After you get your sea legs, we’ll paddle out onto Lake Superior and head into the wind. If the wind is blowing from the west, we’ll paddle to the Fall River and it’s 25-foot tall waterfall. If the wind is blowing from the east, we’ll paddle towards Artist’s Point and see how far we get once we get past it.

The crystal clear waters of Lake Superior that we paddle on for this Grand Marais kayak tour let you peer down to rocks 30 feet below you. In those waters you could see schools of salmon or trout. If you’re lucky you’ll see a sturgeon. The shoreline near Grand Marais is rugged basalt formed during an ancient lava flow. There’s no pressure to paddle great distances, but to the east, if we get far enough, you’ll see multiple types of lava flows.

If we make it to the Fall River, we can land at a kayak camping site for the Lake Superior Water Trail, which runs from Duluth to Grand Portage. This is one of many camping sites on the trail and the only one with a waterfall nearby. Either way we paddle there’s a chance to see eagles, river otters, deer and maybe a fox or two.

Once we turn around, the wind will help blow us back to Grand Marais where we’ll conclude our trip where we began. Our guide will have taught you about the area and you’ll have seen the shoreline from the unique perspective of a kayak.
