Description
Kayak through three sea arches on the way to the Manitou River waterfall which dumps directly into Lake Superior. This intermediate level 11-mile kayaking trip starts at Sugarloaf Cove and follows the rocky Superior shoreline 5 miles to the Manitou River. Along the way, we’ll pass towering cliffs, postcard worthy waterfall, caves and old fishing houses. Keweenawan lava flows and intrusions form the majority of rock along the way and the signs of ancient glaciers mark the rocky shoreline. A boreal forest tops the cliffs along the way.
This is one of the most spectacular kayaking trips along the north shore of Lake Superior, and it’s also a challenging route with limited to no landings — we may end up in the boat for the full 11 miles depending on water levels and sand build up at the river. The Manitou River waterfall is one of the few waterfalls that dump directly into Lake Superior and is only reachable by boat. To join this tour, kayakers must have Essentials of Kayak Touring or equivalent experience.
