Description
Tettegouche State Park and Palisade Head are popular destinations for sea kayakers on Lake Superior. Both areas feature towering cliffs that reach as high as 300 feet above Lake Superior and rugged shorelines of rhyolitic lava extruded some 1.1 billion years ago. Our Tettegouche State park kayak tour takes you past the cliffs of Palisade Head and Shovel Point, through sea caves and past Minnesota’s newest sea stack, which was created several years ago when an arch collapsed during a storm.
In the morning, we launch from the river and paddle past Shovel Point to Crystal Cove. There we’ll find a long cave that disappears into a cliff, turns 90 degrees and comes out the other side. After we paddle through the cave, we’ll kayak back to Tettegouche State Park and land near the back country campsites for lunch. After lunch, we’ll paddle under the cliffs of Palisade Head watching eagles, peregrine falcons and rock climbers on the walls above. Along the way, we’ll poke our kayaks into sea caves and paddle through a long sea arch before turning around. This is the classic Lake Superior kayaking trip.
